So there was an era between 2002 and 2003 where every preteen girl I knew stanned for B2K. I mean stanned. These girls not only knew all of the their albums by heart, but also had their lockers plastered with TigerBeat posters declaring which group member they were married to in Sharpie. That was a bit too much for me, but I can’t deny that J-Boog was my low-key boothang. (Hayy boo). Flash forward a year later and the group disbanded leaving nothing the dance classic You Got Served. (And yes, that should be read with the upmost sarcasm). Until now.

Jhene Aiko was introduced to us as Lil’ Fizz’s “cousin” and fell off the map as soon as they hit that last pop and lock in You Got Served. That was until she jumped on Drake’s leaked July track. After realizing that the girl on the hook was indeed Lil’ Fizz’s “cousin”, I downloaded her mixtape Sailing Souls. Off of the strong song-writing alone, I became a fan. It doesn’t hurt that she has a melodic airy voice despite of toking on the regular.  Her second mixtape, Sail Out, is coming out Nov. 11th.

Yesterday, she dropped the visuals for her Childish Gambino collab, Bed Peace. While Childish is my man, I lent him to Jhene for this video and I guess it turned alright. Okay. I admit it. I love her using John Lennon & Yoko Ono’s bed ins to highlight the song’s emphasis on seeking internal peace. I’m excited to see what song she drops next, I’m voting for her song with Stay Ready (What a Life) with Kendrick Lamar.  If you’re lucky enough to snag a ticket, you can see her on tour with Drake on his Would You Like a Tour? tour.
