Heels will always be what we drool and obsess over. Somehow Converse just wouldn’t have fit the bill in Sex and the City like Louboutins did. But sneakers do have a place in our hearts and closet. Mercifully, for our feet that sport them can even be a fashionable one now.
Sneakers are such an easy way to incorporate the athletic, gym chic trend we’re seeing everywhere including shows like Alexander Wang. However, if you’re anything like me the gym is an anxiety-inducing, confusing place filled with way too much sweat, judging glances, and scary machinery. For those of us that prefer the couch to the elliptical, you can still pull off the sporty look without being sporty with these suggestions.
Pairing fashion pants such as silk pajama style pants or boyfriend jeans looks so on point. A white button up, light wash boyfriend jeans, and neon sneakers is effortlessly cool and I can think of few things both this comfortable and acceptable for public. May I suggest this New Balance pair.
As I said, sneakers are a big part of the athletic trend and look awesome with athletic pieces. In order to clear up any “is she going to the gym right now” confusion, throw on a leather jacket to break up the athletic wear and make your look more polished.
Wedge sneakers can be scary. Do you wear them like heels or sneakers? Both! You get the leg enhancing benefits of heels with the comfort and easy walking of sneakers. These wedges are surprisingly versatile. I like them with a short flowy dress, a large luxe coat like Alessandra Ambrosio, skinny jeans, or a loose t-shirt and a fitted skirt. My absolute favorite look is a solid body hugging maxi dress paired with an anorak or leather jacket
Try mixing your prints. Just like you would mix prints with pants and shirts, try it with your sneakers and jacket or shirt. It’s so easy and shows a lot of personality. Rihanna mixed cheetah print sneakers with a subtly printed shirt. I can see this tiger pair looking rad with so many other prints.
A classic, clean, white sneaker can be added to almost any outfit. They act as a nice, unexpected change from flats that is modern and young. Rihanna looks so edgy and put together with her white kicks.
Last but never least, Converse. These are a staple in cool, downtown, alternagirl footwear. They go with everything. From prom dresses to leather skinnies to cutoffs, they will never disappoint. Take a cue from Lana del Rey who has made them a central part of her iconic look.
