A few weeks ago, we were graced with the presence of professional surfer (and ultra mega-babe), Leila Hurst, for an impromptu shoot and interview. While it was cold and dreary outside, the studio was shaking with energy from the electric ball of fire that is Leila. Hailing from the shores of Kauai, this babe grew up practically living in the ocean, paving the way towards becoming one of the biggest names in women’s surf. Not only is she majorly talented, but she is also one of the best dressed (seriously!) surfers around and is proudly sponsored by one of our rad brands, Vans. During her stay in Boston, we decided to play dress up with some of our favorite pieces from their Spring/Summer collection, while we pretended like it was 100 degrees outside. Check out our interview with Leila, shop for her Miss KL faves, and cop her killer Vans looks!
Who are you and what do you do:
Name: Leila Hurst
Sponsors: Vans, Skullcandy, Zeal Optics, Waikoko Water, HIC Surf Boards, Sticky Bumps.
How did you first get into surfing:
I started surfing with my dad when I was pretty young. I grew up on the island of Kauai where you’re literally surrounded by ocean. I felt like there was nothing else to do for fun, so I just surfed. The ocean is super healing to me, whether I’m sick or just having a bad day. I feel like surfing has really been therapeutic to me. There’s nothing else I’d rather do.
What has kept you so motivated to surf over the years?
My sister has been such a huge motivation for me. She was born with a spinal defect and I think that has really helped push me to strive for the best. I grew up with her sitting at home not being able to do much while I was out and about, and she kind of just made me appreciate life a lot more. She’s such a positive person, and she has so much less than I do. It’s really motivating to be around her…she’s amazing.
How would you describe your personal style?
I grew up in a bikini, so I don’t think I have much of a personal style. However, if I were to describe it as anything, I’d say my style was super beachy and relaxed. It’s funny because I seem to have that permanent “messy beach hair” that so many people strive for, and I just don’t even try.
What was it like growing up in such a small community? Do you feel like that has shaped your personality in any way?
I loved growing up in Kauai. I’m a super small-town girl, and I definitely think my community had a part in making me who I am today. I grew up with such a tight family, and I think that has really molded the way I go about building relationships with people.
What’s a typical day like for you?
I’ll normally work out, and surf. If I’m on a surf trip I’ll usually surf all day long. It sounds pretty cliché, but I literally surf all the time.
Who are some of your favorite musical artists?
I’m definitely into Rihanna and Lana Del Rey… This weekend at the festival I JUST discovered Bad Rabbits, and Of Monsters & Men and am totally obsessed.
What are 5 things you can’t leave the house without?
My heart necklace
