You may already be familiar with the many get-ups that artist/photographer Cindy Sherman disguises herself as, but ironically most of you would probably not recognize her sans the attire and makeup. Well, here she is in this untitled self portrait taken fresh out of college in 1976. Sherman transforms herself into different characters in staged environments that challenge the role of women whether it be in the work force, media, or society at large. Sherman is both exposed and hidden, named and nameless in her work. She once said “I feel I’m anonymous in my work. When I look at the pictures, I never see myself; they aren’t self-portraits. Sometimes I disappear.”
