Known for his large-scale highly stylized black and white portraits, Robert Mapplethorpe was a pioneer working to diversify and broaden the spectrum of content within the art world . The overt eroticism of some of his work triggered much controversy about the public funding of artworks, and what was deemed art versus what was considered an obscenity. Mapplethorpe photographed artists such as Andy Warhol, Deborah Harry, Grace Jones, and Patti Smith. This photo was taken of Nick Marden bass guitarist of the punk band The Stimulators.
