Earlier this year the ever defiant M.I.A. released her “Bad Girls” music video, a car-centric, live fast, die young contradiction to the typical American style pop video. As always, it was packed full of gorgeous unconventional style, with clear inspiration drawn from Arabic culture. The Moroccan-set video stirred up controversy regarding its depictions of the Arab world and the roles of women within that culture. Of course, controversy is nothing new for the Sri Lankan songstress, as indicated by the reaction to her red-head genocide in “Born Free.”
But if “Bad Girls” happened to fly under your radar four months ago, you can look forward to renewed buzz with the upcoming release of “Bad Girls – The Remixes,” featuring collaborations with Missy Elliott, Rye Rye and Azealia Banks. The release is set for July 3rd, but you can already pre-order a gold MIA “Bad Girls” USB necklace featuring the songs on her site. Until then, get excited by re-watching the video (above).
