The New York Times recently launched a Tumblr titled The Lively Morgue as a space to revisit iconic images from its well-developed archives. This one ran on November 26, 1974, with the headline “Gutsy Decision: Hold On or Let Fly.” The site is such a great research tool for tapping into cultural moments throughout the publication’s century old tenure as a news authority, even displaying the back of each photo where context and publication details are present. Keep in mind that if the NYT published 10 new archival pictures every weekday, the entire collection would not be online until the year 3935. Take in the curated set that is posted online and digest some history!
