Your best beauty friends should be colorless, transparent products. It seems counter intuitive to invest in something that brings no overt hue or warmth to your makeup routine, but if you want to make your pigmented and polished products work then clear needs to be in your arsenal.

All you beauty buffs out there have likely jumped on the bandwagon already. However, if cosmetic prowess is not in your skill set, you will probably be glad to know that there are countless choices and price points for primers, lip liners, and finishing powders. Am I speaking in gibberish to some of you with those product terms? Fear not. Here is a quick breakdown:

  • Primer! Use primers to achieve a smooth, flawless look with any face or eye cosmetics. Generally these come in a clear, silicone-like formula (though not all actually have silicone has an ingredient!) and occasionally you will see them in nude or subtly tinted tones. I’ve even heard of gals simply using primer and nothing else to achieve an essentially makeup-less, super bare look. On the flip side, many makeup artists would assert that creating the coveted “naked” look is actually one of the more complex appearances to achieve. Whatever your belief, this should always be your first step before applying any product on clean, moisturized skin. Personally, I’m obsessed with Bare Escentuals bareVitamin PRIME TIME for my face and Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion for my peepers.
  • Lip liner! Next up is a revolutionary item that suddenly many major brands have started to manufacture. If you favor bold matte lipsticks to sheer glosses you have probably had a nightmare experience with feathering and bleeding of the color. For an average expense of $18, you no longer need to purchase a lip liner to coordinate with every color, nor do you need to think twice about the aforementioned nightmares. Use these transparent lip pencils to prevent any lip maladies: MAKE UP FOR EVER Lip Line Perfector, Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Lip Pencil in Ozone, or Too Faced Borderline Smoothing, Anti-Feathering Lip Pencil.
  • Finishing Powder! Finally, once all your layers of gorgeousness are applied, you’ve gotta top off the process with a finishing powder for a nice airbrushed look. Most major cosmetic brands have some sort of offering, but my pick is Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil (basically I use the whole bareMinerals family).
